This press cupboard, a reproduction of the 'Putnam' cupboard, is a
premier example of late 17th century 'mannerist ' style. Its striking decorative
effects are achieved entirely through the use of applied ornamentation, without any
carving . The geometrical patterns on the drawer fronts and the positioning of the
split spindles are very carefully calculated to create a sense of mass and solidity.
The original was most likely made in Salem, Massachusetts, and is in the
collections of the Peabody-Essex Museum.
Our reproduction was made to furnish a privately-owned 17th century house, and so was
carefully colored to match the appearance of the original piece.
