Boarded desk boxes like this one were commonly fitted in the interior with partitions and sometimes drawers, for the storage of papers and writing supplies. This example was modeled after a New England original. The top is fitted with hand-made 'dovetail' hinges, and has a ledger at its lower edge to prevent books or papers from sliding off. |
