Joined Armchair

wpe1F.jpg (13912 bytes)

The throne like great chair was associated with the master of the house, who sat it in at the head of the table.  Joined arm chairs, sometimes referred to in the period as 'wainscot chairs', would seem to have been fairly rare in New England.    Few are mentioned in household inventories, and there are only about a dozen surviving colonial examples.  The original of this reproduction descended in the Winslow family of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and has structural details that connect it to other South Shore furniture.  The original, and this reproduction, are in the collections of Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
