This turned chair with rush seat is based on details from two early New England chairs, the overall design coming from one, the additional spindles below the seat coming from another. These design particulars, and the worn red paint finish, were produced in response to the clients wishes. Spindle-backed chairs of this sort are thought to be the earliest style of turned chair in New England, the slat-back appearing later in the 17th century. |
