This commonly-termed "sunflower" chest (after
the three flowers in the center panel), is based on an original at Yale University.
It is one of more than a hundred extant examples that were made in the Connecticut River
Valley of Connecticut and Massachusetts at the end of the seventeenth century.
"Sunflower" chests, along with the equally numerous "Hadley" chests
from the same area, represent the greatest number of extant American pieces of furniture
from the period. This reproduction displays some of the vibrant decorative qualities
of these late-century pieces as they would have appeared when new, in which color and tone
is used to striking effect.
